Y&R: sharon newman and frank barritt?

I know that frank barritt was cassie's biological dad...but how did he die? Cause i remember a car trunk and he was haunting sharon. Was this along with phyllis being pregnant...the thing that ruined nick and sharon's marriage? Oh and when did this storyline originally air?
