I broke my wrist and arm about 10 days ago?

it required surgery which was done 6 days ago. i am 68 years old. i don't like taking the meds given me for pain and have been holding off untill i can't take it anymore. how long is this injury going to hurt like this? my arm feels so heavy and tired as wel. this whole thing has me very upset.
